Historically spoken just by the Karnali Khas people, now spoken as the lingua franca in Nepal.
In India, Nepali is one of the Eighth Schedule languages, i.e. languages of regional significance. Thus, it is not official on federal level but only in states where it is actively spoken.
In the state of Sikkim, Nepali is one of the main official languages in use.
In the state of West Bengal, Nepali is one of the additional official languages, which are secondary to more widely used main official languages.
